Escape to the peaceful southern mountains of Portugal and join Ellis and Camilla at our rural off-grid home set in a 6-hectare valley in the mountainous region of the Serra de Monchique, Algarve. Just a 20-minute drive from the spa town of Monchique and 35 minutes from the surfing beaches of Odeceixe and Aljezur, we believe we have everything to make your holiday truly special.

What makes our place so unique?

Staying here is like stepping back into another world where time slows right down and you can truly get away from all the busyness of daily life, immersing yourself into the natural rhythm of life. Living off-grid means that we are totally reliant on the sun for our electricity and our spring water comes directly from a water source in the rocks. We have no light pollution so when night-time falls the sky awakens into a jewelled tapestry of pure, glistening beauty.

We offer low-cost holidays and retreats where you can completely chill – or if you feel more adventurous – explore the surrounding area at your leisure. We have many options for you to choose from including self-catering or alternatively let us cook for you. We also offer yoga, gong baths and therapies. Please click here for accommodation and prices.

We especially welcome people who are in a 12-step program and twice a year we offer yoga retreats for 12-steppers.

Our yoga retreats and workshops are for small groups and we are keen for teachers and facilitators to run their retreats here, please click here for more information.

We are a small glamping & yoga establishment that sleeps no more than 12 people at any time, which means that you will enjoy an exclusive yet affordable experience. So if you are looking to get away from it all, then look no further!

Our accommodation is simple and comprises of the following:

  • Five spacious bell tents, sleeping two comfortably in slatted beds with proper mattresses and warm bedding
  • Space for camper vans

All rooms are fitted with comfortable beds and our facilities include the following:

  • Three compost toilets
  • Four hot showers
  • Clean bedding and towels
  • A washing machine – (€5 per load- free for volunteers)
  • 2 bicycles for exploring (more to come)
  • A filtered stand alone pool
  • Film nights
  • Extra bed in your room for a child up to 10 years old if available (€5 per stay for cleaning costs)

Our location is the perfect setting for people to relax, unwind and re-connect with nature.

Surrounded by glorious mother nature and set in a valley in Serra de Monchique, we are gifted with stunning views of Mount Foia, the largest mountain in the Algarve. Our position is close to the south and west coast of Portugal thus benefiting us with incredibly clean Atlantic air and with no traffic on the roads combined with our off-grid lifestyle we have  little pollution, including no light pollution; so yoga and pranayama can be practiced in the sun and shade or under the moon and stars!

“Allow the fresh mountain air to energise you from the outside in and from the inside out!”

Most of our retreats are for 7-nights, however you can also opt for a 3-day-yoga-mini-break, perfect for a pause out of your busy routine, giving you the chance to unwind, relax and reset yourself. We combine our yoga retreats with trips to the stunning west coast, visiting some of Portugal’s best and least populated beaches, giving you a chance to have some fun in the sun and splash about or even surf in the Atlantic Ocean. Click here for upcoming retreats.

Our vegetarian home cooked meals are packed with goodness and as our own organic garden begins to flourish we include our produce whenever we can. All other fruit and vegetables are sourced mainly from local farmers.

Due to our principle of keeping yoga inclusive rather than exclusive we aim to offer a fair deal for yoga students coming to our in-house yoga retreats taught by Camilla and to also offer a good deal for teachers and facilitators (of all disciplines) who are looking to run a retreat here. about us

Bom dia!

We’re delighted that you have taken an interest in Rural Escapes Portugal. We are both professionals from the UK (London & Brighton). Ellis is an accomplished builder who can fix absolutely anything and everything and I am an experienced yoga teacher who has also worked in education for many years.

We have three grown-up daughters between us and good lives back in Brighton. However with the girls now grown up we felt we wanted to do something completely different together, experience self-sufficient living and build something that we could enjoy with others.

So how did we end up here?

We both became excited when we saw 6 hectares of land for sale in Portugal advertised on the internet and we decided take a look. That was back in 2015.

It hasn’t take us long to fall in love with this beautiful valley with it’s stunning views of Mount Foia. It is incredibly peaceful here with little disturbance as there are no roads running through it and no neighbours near by.

The land has many native trees including cork trees, Medronho (strawberry tree) and Eucalyptus, our aim is to eventually clear the land of Eucalyptus and introduce more native plants and trees including fruit and nut trees. There is no mains electricity here so we live completely off the grid.

Although neither of us came from a permaculture background we have found ourselves becoming drawn to this way of living, we fully appreciate the intelligence of mother nature and have found that as we move through the seasons we are continuously learning about the land, how to manage it and to live in harmony with it.

These are fresh and exciting times for us which we embrace fully. We hope you are able to join us here and become part of this adventure either as a guest, or perhaps on one of our retreats or even as a volunteer.
