Rural Escapes Portugal offers a low-cost holiday where you can relax and explore the surrounding area. We are also especially open to people who are in a 12-step program and Camilla designs yoga retreats especially for them. We are delighted to be opening for bed & breakfast bookings from June 2018. Please click here for accommodation and prices.

We also run yoga retreats and workshops for small groups. We are keen for other teachers/facilitators to run their retreats here and we offer competive and flexible deals for them, please click here for more information.  In the future we plan to run various courses including permaculture, art, cookery, and building – Watch this space!

Our location is the perfect setting for people to relax, unwind and re-connect with nature and themselves.

Surrounded by glorious mother nature and set in a valley in Serra de Monchique, we are gifted with stunning views of Mount Foia, the largest mountain in the Algarve. Our position is close to the south and west coast of Portugal thus benefiting us with incredibly clean Atlantic air and with hardly any traffic on the roads combined with our off-grid lifestyle we have very little pollution, including no light pollution; so yoga and pranayama can be practiced in the sun and shade or under the moon and stars!

“Allow the fresh mountain air to energise you from the outside in and from the inside out!”

Most of our retreats are for 7-nights, however you can also opt for a 3-day-yoga-mini-break, perfect for a pause out of your busy routine, giving you the chance to unwind, relax and reset yourself. We combine our yoga retreats with trips to the stunning west coast, visiting some of Portugal’s best and least populated beaches, giving you a chance to have some fun in the sun and splash about or even surf in the Atlantic Ocean. Click here for upcoming retreats.

Our vegetarian home cooked meals are packed with goodness and as our own organic garden begins to flourish we will include our produce whenever we can. All other fruit and vegetables are sourced mainly from local farmers.

Due to our principle of keeping yoga inclusive rather than exclusive we aim to offer a fair deal for yoga students coming to our in-house yoga retreats taught by Camilla and to also offer a good deal for teachers, of various disciplines, looking to run a retreat here. For teachers and facilitators interested in running a retreat at our venue please click here.

about us

We’re delighted that you have taken an interest in Rural Escapes  Portugal. We are both professionals from the UK (London & Brighton). Ellis is an accomplished builder who can fix absolutely anything and everything and I am an experienced yoga teacher and also worked in education for many years.

We have three grown-up daughters between us and good lives back in Brighton. However with the girls now grown up we felt we wanted to do something completely different together, experience self-sufficient living and build something that we could enjoy with others.

So how did we end up here?

We both became excited when we saw 6 hectares of land for sale in Portugal advertised on the internet and we decided take a look. That was back in 2015.

It hasn’t take us long to fall in love with this beautiful valley with it’s stunning views of Mount Foia. It is incredibly peaceful here with little disturbance as there are no roads running through it and no neighbours near by. The land has many native trees including cork trees, Medronho (strawberry tree) and Eucalyptus, our aim is to eventually clear the land of Eucalyptus and introduce more native plants and trees including fruit and nut trees. There is no mains electricity here so we live completely off the grid.

Although neither of us came from a permaculture background we have found ourselves becoming drawn to this way of living, we fully appreciate the intelligence of permaculture and have found that as we move through the seasons we are learning more about the land and how to manage it.

These are fresh and exciting times for us which we embrace fully and we hope you are able to join us here and become part of this adventure either as a guest, or perhaps on one of our retreats or even as a volunteer.
