moving mountains from ranch to resort!

Rural Escapes Portugal has really sprung into life these last few months – What with three retreats under our belt and now people are staying here for their holidays, we literally feel like we’ve just moved mountains!

The other day we were having a conversation with one of our guests who referred to Rural Escapes Portugal as ‘the resort’ … I was quite taken back and gasped a little to hurriedly “well it’s not really a resort is it?” but she was adamant that it was!

I have to say it feels quite surreal to be at this stage of our project after so many months of mud, dust, sweat, tears and laughter to suddenly be managing a resort (lol!) – and a very exclusive one at that!  We’ve decided we want to keep our place small and intimate and not have more than 8 guests staying here at any time. Currently we’re taking accommodation bookings for just two of our bell tents so that we can see how we go in our first year.  So you can rest assured that if you decide to stay here there will be no more than 4 guests here at any time, giving you a chance to enjoy the ‘resort’ facilities exclusively.

“Why not give yourself an exclusive break here at our Rural Escapes Portugal Resort!”

What do we offer?  We offer yoga most mornings, optional breakfast and dinner, flight transfers and trips out – giving you the chance to do absolutely nothing but lounge around our little pool, choose a book from our library and hang out in a hammock under the shade of a tree to while away your days or for those who are more adventurous you can take a walk along the many paths that zigzag through the valleys, or hire a bike and explore the local area, and even take a beautiful drive or if you prefer have us drive you through this landscape to one of the many beaches that are situated less than 40 minutes away.  It’s all here for you to choose and enjoy!

Are you having any concerns about glamping here?

I am always in awe of our retreat guests who have the courage to stay here despite their concerns about camping and living in such a rural location

Yoga of the HeartTwo retreat guests come to mind. They both attended different retreats and were both quite anxious about camping. They expressed that they had had a couple of sleepless nights before arriving and had even considered dropping out altogether. They knew from our website that they would be staying in a rural location and that our beds in the bell tents would be comfortable slatted beds, with duvets, blankets, sleeping bags if needed and even carpets – but the idea of using outdoor showers (all showers are private by the way) and compost toilets coupled with sleeping in the great outdoors can often set the imagination spiraling into a state of panic!

saying goodbyesWe have found that it is only after people have spent their first night here that they quickly realise how comfortable staying here actually is. It doesn’t take long before they are enjoying the scenery from the comfort of their roomy bell tents with magnificent views, lounging in a hammock with a book or podcast, they soon forget their concerns as they relax into the natural rhythm of ‘glamping’ life in our valley.

The majority of our guests have shared how incredibly well they sleep here and find they fall into very deep states of sleep full of dreams thus wake up feeling very rested and relaxed, and this has been said by those who usually have trouble sleeping in their normal day to day lives.

I am pleased to say that both guests had wonderful experiences here explaining they were pleasantly surprised at how comfortable it is here and both will be returning (woohoo!!!)

If you have any questions about staying here then do get in touch with us and we will aim to put your mind at rest and can put you in touch with previous guests who shared similar concerns.

oh to be a Buddha in the wind and rain

We’ve had an interesting 3 months preparing for our first retreat, which I would like to say was stress free as we tapped into our Buddha natures, but that would be telling a lie!

Just as we were getting probably a bit too comfortable with how smoothly everything was going the weather changed. The skies literally opened up and showered us with constant rain for over two months. At first we were delighted to see the rain as we really needed it after last years dry spring and summer.  But as the weeks turned into months all we could do was look on in desperation as we watched all the work that we and our volunteers had done slowly be destroyed as the rain turned itself into rivers.

Thankfully in the week just before the retreat we had a dry spell and the land dried up just enough to allow us to repair some of the damage and to get the bell tents up. Thankfully our friends Jason and Isabel came to the rescue with three of their workaways and joined our team (Gillian, Keith and Cloe) who all managed to get the four bell tents up just in time.

I am pleased to say that our first seven retreat guests were non the wiser when they arrived. Instead of the chaos of the week before they were able to enjoy a serene and beautiful landscape that had been cleared and prepared just for them and their enjoyment.

new year new beginnings

I don’t know about you but I found 2017 to be a difficult year. There seemed to be a tidal wave of challenges happening both locally and globally. Even living in the middle of nowhere I found it hard to fully enjoy what we’ve been creating instead feeling the weight of all the suffering and insanity going on in the world. I guess the best we can do is to continuously shine our light in the darkness (and I know that is often easier said than done) and what better way for Ellis and I to do this than by sharing Rural Escapes Portugal with others. From the beginning of the project our principle has been to make Rural Escapes Portugal an ‘inclusive’ rather than exclusive place for people to relax and rejuvenate themselves; offering yoga and healthy food in this breathtaking rural location.

Ellis on his diggerThe reality we face at the moment is the sheer mammoth task of  preparing this place for our first retreat beginning at the end of April. As I type I can hear Ellis on his digger (also known as the man cave!!) preparing areas for the four new bell tents that we recently purchased. We’ve chosen 4 perfect locations for the bell tents with easy access to the showers and soon to be kitchen area and with stunning views across the vally and beyond to Mount Foia. We’ve also opted to have the stand alone pool in the wooded area, so people can enjoy cooling down in the shade of the trees in the long hot summer months. We’ve agreed that the yoga platform needs to be bigger, so more work to do there.

Other areas to be prepared and completed include an open kitchen, 2 shaded areas for chilling out in and a new covered eating area, a new toilet, a wash basin near the showers.  And then there is the purchasing of mattresses, bedding, towels, cooking items – the list goes on and on.

Liz was our most recent guest and stayed with us into the new year. She worked hard helping Ellis prepare logs for shaded area structures both at Sunrise Lodge, the yoga platform and the kitchen area, she also created a new feature area that includes two barrels for growing herbs and plants and a stunning dry wall. Thank you Liz for your drive and enthusiasm, you are a complete star!

We have 6 new workaway guests coming to help us over the next four weeks or so, one has a 2 and 1/2 month puppy so Mani (our dog) will be very pleased to have a little friend to play with, although I’m not so sure Boo (our cat) will be so excited!

If you are interested in coming to stay here then please look at our accommodation and yoga retreats pages for all the details of what is available.

Wishing you a wonderful year!
